چکیده

Flow of a blood analog is modeled through a patient-specific aortic coarctation using ANSYS Fluent software. Details of the patient data (aortic geometry and prescribed flow conditions) were provided by the MICCAI-STACOM CFD Challenge website. The objective is to predict a blood pressure difference across the rigid coarctation under both rest and exercise (stress) conditions. The supplied STL geometry was used to create coarse and fine viscous meshes of 250K and 4.6M cells. Our CFD method employed laminar, Newtonian flow with a total pressure inlet condition and special outlet BCs derived from reconstructed flow waveforms. Analysis setup and outlet BCs were treated as a traditional non-physiological CFD problem. CFD results demonstrate that the supplied AscAo pressure waveform and flow distributions are well matched by our simulations. A non-uniform pressure gradient field is predicted across the coarctation with strong interactions with each supra-aortic vessel branch.

The Impact of Cardiac Motion on Aortic Valve Flow Used in Computational Simulations of the Thoracic Aorta.

Advancements in image-based computational modeling are producing increasingly more realistic representations of vasculature and hemodynamics, but so far have not compensated for cardiac motion when imposing inflow boundary conditions. The effect of cardiac motion on aortic flow is important when assessing sequelae in this region including coarctation of the aorta (CoA) or regurgitant fraction. ...

A 1D Lumped-Parameter/3D CFD Approach for Pressure Drop in the Aortic Coarctation

Aortic Coarctation is a congenital constriction of the aorta that increases blood pressure above the constriction and hinders the flow below it. Based on a 3D surface mesh of a moderate thoracic coarctation, a high quality volume mesh is created using an optimal tetrahedral aspect ratio for whole domain. In order to quantify the severity of this constriction, a coupled 1D lumped-parameter/3D CF...

A Finite Element CFD Simulation for Predicting Patient-Specific Hemodynamics of an Aortic Coarctation

This paper presents a numerical simulation of the flow characteristics through a patient-specific model of an aortic coarctation. The purpose of the study was to predict the pressure gradient at rest and at exercise conditions. The commercial package ADINA was used to numerically solve the governing equations using finite-elements methods. The model was based on the patient's MR angiography dat...

Characterisation of spatiotemporal aortic flow and aortic wall biomechanics in coarctation

The thoracic aorta performs sophisticated functions which depends largely on its almost unique structure. Coarctation of the aorta is a relatively common congenital anomaly, which causes a heavy burden of morbidity and mortality worldwide. As emphasized by Suradi and Hijazy in this issue of the journal, the long-term results can be very variable due to many factors. There is now a growing reali...

Blood Flow Simulation in an Aorta with a mild coarctation Using Magnetic Resonance Angiography and Finite Volume Method

Coarctation of the aorta is one of the five main congenital cardiovascular failures, accounting for 6–8 percent of these failures. This research aimed to simulate the blood flow of a seventeen-year-old male teen with a mild coarctation at one-third of his aorta's descending branch. The simulation was performed by extracting the domain and the input pulsatile velocity signal as the boundary cond...
